UNIT X - EDUCATOR: TOPIC: REFLECTION

When reflecting on the discoveries I have found within the

Educator unit are the different things you have to consider if you want to peruse a teaching career. Such as child protection, which is a very important aspect as it, is essential to know the appropriate way to act and be around children.

Another aspect, which I have discovered from observing my tutors and the teachers from DACA, is that every one has a different style or technique when teaching. When researching my own teaching style I completed a teaching style survey, which suggested that the style of my teaching is a demonstrator or coach like it states that I have one main goal that is to show the students what they need to know.

·       Pros: Demonstrative teachers incorporate a variety of teaching formats including lectures, multimedia presentations and student-involved demonstrations.

·       Cons: Because of the high degree of engagement, it is difficult to accommodate students’ individual needs in larger classrooms.

Having this teaching style implies in a larger class I would not be able to work on a one to one basis with my students. Suggesting that I would struggle to teach a larger class.

To resolve this I would have to consider incorporating a more Authority, or lecture style. This style is centred on the teacher taking and the students absolving the information by using methods such as note taking. This would improve my teaching method, as it is important to have a good medium of all the different methods to become a good teacher.

When considering what I learned in the Educator unit is a basic introduction of what it is, to be a teacher and the steps you have to take to peruse is as a career option. The main aspects of which I have learnt are teamwork can not work without communication and effort as well as what is expected of you when working in a professional setting e.g. time management, dedication, planning and organization. This unit has helped me discover that teaching high school student is not the age range I would like to work with I now understand that I would like to work with a older age range such as college students or adults.

 My engagement with the workshops has been successful as I communicated well with my peers and delegated the different roles between our team mates an example of how well one of our workshops was a viewer from unit X she has commissioned the pompoms stall and stated that “the pompoms workshop is a great idea and it works well to engage with people.” However one aspect I could improve on is stating my own opinions in-group tutorials including confidence as I have always struggled saying no to people this is an aspect I need to work on. I could achieve this by speaking more in the tutorials and by putting myself out of my comfort zone.

As an art student I save a lot of my old materials as you never know when it can come in handy which it did in the peppered moth workshop by recycling my old materials I was considering the cost and also the environment. The students in the moth workshop where quite young by placing small amounts of the materials on paper plate and by put away the rest for the next table this gave each child equal opportunity to use the same materials. During this workshop and the DACA one we split each process onto different table this method helped us to mange the students and develop the different stages of the moth.

By doing the different stages’ it helped the children to understand what happened to the peppered moth.

During this unit I have discovered when creating a workshop for art it is more hands on and requires you to consider the materials and processed by dry running your workshop this helped me to consider what’s what I need to re consider also improvement. Planning and prep is one of my key motivations of which I would take further in my future practise I have enjoyed this brief it as helped me develop me practise to become a teacher.

Week three Pepperd Moth

By structuring our team into smaller groups helped us with our workload, as it would be much more confusing for our group to do all tasks at once by using this method it helped us to produce each part easily not getting confused of which role you should do.

My group where organizing the Peppered Moth making this surprisingly went off without a hitch, all the children were polite and eager to participate in the making task. By sitting in different places round the table it helped us each to all work with a small group of children which was easier as there where young children there which needed one to one attention making their moth.

My thought about the task is I enjoyed doing it however, I was very ill on the day so I could not work to my full potential. By cutting pieces in prep for the younger children was helpful as so many struggled with the task however, by planning our event we had enough stencils for the job I think for our first attempt it I really went well.

UNIT X - EDUCATOR: TOPIC: LINES OF ENQUIRE

When reviewing the collaborative aspects of my work the peppered moth activity worked well. By planning and dividing the work between my peers enabled us to produce a workshop that was successful. I have discovered that communication is the most important aspect when working in a group.

For example the workshop for DACA was unsuccessful as part of my team where not communicating with us after many attempts to contact them to plan our workshop my teammates decided that they wanted to cancel the workshop which left me and my teammate feeling sad and frustrated. Vince Lombardi states that “Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”

 Which is true in my opinion each person has to participate for the workshop to become successful. Working together as a team it was great to get a different perspective and approaches to the workshop ideas. Working in a team was a fun experience, which has, leads me to consider this approach in my future projects.

When reflection upon the key development it within my own personal skillset would have to be my confidence, for example the micro teaching brief was very scary, as I have always struggled with anxiety attacks. However I managed to overcome this aspect using methods such as breathing exorcizes and by placing your self if more stressful situations to overcome your anxiety. Bergsten suggest that best solutions which will help concur your anxiety is “focus on caring about teaching and making adequate preparations for each class, but they are also likely to involve taking things less seriously, easing up on oneself.” Also the Amy Cuddy video help me as it suggested that i face being brave and confident untill I make it. This technique has been working well.

Planning my workshop was the most helpful thing in my options I discovered this in my micro teaching workshop. By planning my workshop correctly I was able to comply with the ten-minute time limit and if my workshop was to quick its best to have a back up activity, as you can never be to prepared. 

 My placement in DACA has helped me to understand that there are many different approaches to teaching art. Artist have to consider and question everything about by using strategies such as will help you teaching methods.

. Use themes and big ideas driven by essential questions to frame your investigation

. Give students options: introduce multiple artists and media sources

. Push beyond a media-driven curriculum

. Think and talk more; make less

. Emphasize process over product

The art teachers in DACA all incorporated these strategies into their lessons and worked successfully. I now understand that teaching in a high school is not for me as most of the students do not wish to be in the lesson or want to learn. I would like to peruse teaching college students or adults as they are more mature and want to learn.

 During the Six Form lesions I really enjoyed my time there as all the students where motivated when creating their work the environment was completely different form the school class as I felt the learning was forced however in the six form class the teaching approach was more nurturing both tutor and student where enjoying their time in the lesion.

 When researching the different quality’s you should have to teach higher education states that you will need to be able to relate well to students of all ages and abilities. You’ll need good organisation and planning skills. You’ll also need patience and a sense of humour. Which is true as can always remeber my college tutors always-making jokes and not being to serious with the students.

The qualifications which I would have to attain if wanted to be a college tutor include: Level 1 2 4 and 5 and also You will be expected to already hold a minimum of a Level 3 qualification in the subject area you wish to teach. You will also need a teaching qualification that is relevant to the level of teaching responsibility that you have in your job. -

The Educator brief has helped me to visualize a clear plan for my future career. By researching the different requirements and roles you have to consider when teaching is more complex as I first perceived. Teaching requires a lot of effort and dedication this brief has given me the inspiration and support to try and achieve me teaching goal.
